The latest car sales data shows that in September 2016, the sales volume of entry-level luxury cars in the US fell 17.4% year-over-year (or YoY) to 49,118 vehicle units. We should say that it is a significant decline. For the same period, the sales of entry-level luxury SUVs rose 12.6% YoY to 54,145 units, and the sales of entry-level sports cars fell 9% YoY to 25,408 units. Top car models in these entry-level luxury and sports vehicle segments were the BMW3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Lexus RX, Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, and Dodge Challenger.
A total of 11,590 mid-range luxury cars were sold in the US in September 2016, representing a 19.9% YoY decline. For the same period, the sales of mid-range luxury SUVs rose 12.8% to 24,563 units. The sales of mid-range sports cars remained flat at 3,978 units with a 1.5% YoY drop. In this category, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series, Acura MDX, and Chevrolet Corvette were among the best-selling vehicle models. Similarly, the sales of premium luxury cars in September 2016 fell 4.5% YoY to 4,218 units. At the same time, premium luxury SUVs witnessed a significant increase of 17.8% YoY to reach 6,263 units. The sales of premium sports cars fell 9.1% YoY to 1,391 units. In the premium luxury vehicle segment, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series, Cadillac Escalade, and Porsche 911/918 were among the best-selling vehicle models.
