Hyundai is recalling 62,811 Sonata and Sonata Hybrid cars in the United States because the panoramic glass sunroof can detach while driving and fly into traffic. The recall covers model year 2015-2016 Sonata Hybrid vehicles manufactured Dec. 8, 2014, to Aug. 18, 2015, and Hyundai Sonata vehicles manufactured May 28, 2014, to March 18, 2016, equipped with the panoramic sunroof option.
According to recall documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there is a problem with the bonding of the wind deflector anchor plate in front of the sunroof. A loose deflector can detach and interfere with the roof as it closes. A follow-up inspection by Hyundai technicians discovered “if customer repeatedly cycled sunroof or tried to force sunroof closed by hand, the sunroof panel could detach.”
