While it's certainly true that a Model 3 will be cheapest way to get into a brand-new Tesla, let's be clear that there will be practically zero Model 3s at its base starting price of $35,000. Here's why.

Choosing any color other than black raises the Model 3's price by a grand. If you want an upgraded interior package, that will cost you additional $5,000. To be fair, a package that includes upgraded 12-way power heated seats, open-pore wood trim, a higher-end audio system, and a center console with docking for two smartphones is very attractive at that $5K price point. It's such a good deal, in fact, that we'd be surprised if most Model 3s weren't so equipped, which raises the non-black electric vehicle to $41,000. The driver, who has not been identified, lost control of his brand new car, a Ferrari 430 Scuderia, on a motorway in South Yorkshire, England, on July 27.

The police report that the car was found roughly 150 feet down an embankment where it caught fire, which is how it ended up in such a sorry state. Based on the post, the road was wet, and the implication is he may have been driving more aggressively than he should have based on road conditions, but not at illegal speeds. The 2018 Ford Mustang GT is the fastest Mustang ever?

The new 2018 Ford Mustang GT is being claimed as the automaker’s fastest version ever. According to official announcements, it will be able to make 460 hp, 420-pounds of torque and go 0-60 mph in less than 4 seconds, which makes it faster than a Porsche 911 Carrera. Thanks to the new Drag Strip mode, the 2018 Mustang GT is now the fastest Mustang GT ever.

The new engine and transmission have an impressive number of updates. A new drag-strip mode manages the drivetrain electronically so torque doesn’t drop. BMW aims to electrify all brands and model lines

BMW has officially announced that it plans to produce a fully electric version of the three-door hatchback Mini. The car will go into production in 2019, and the battery electric drivetrain will be produced at BMW’s Bavarian facilities, then transported to Plant Oxford where it will join the cars. BMW says there will remain a diesel variant in addition to the petrol, plug-in hybrid, and EV versions of the Mini. No prototype shots have been released of the upcoming cars; the current one was unveiled in late 2013.

The UK production location isn’t the only place where BMW builds Minis, as the former Volvo/Mitsubishi/Smart NedCar plant in the Netherlands has been tooled to build some of the 360,000 Minis built yearly. UK Business Secretary Greg Clark considers the choice to build EV Minis in Britain a “vote of confidence” despite Brexit, and that it would see battery technology development boosted in the UK. By the time the EV version starts production, UK will likely have already left the European Union. Read more 

Meet your entry-level world-class racecar – the new Mercedes-AMG GT4!

We hope you remember that last year Mercedes–AMG teased the entry-level version of the GT racecar, the Mercedes-AMG GT4. This week at Belgium’s Spa-Francorchamps, the German automaker finally pulled all the wraps off the new car. The GT4 is based on the AMG GT R and has been homologated for FIA GT4-spec racing series. It’s more affordable than the GT3-spec car that debuted more than two years ago. Still, it’s sure to be a beast in whatever series it enters.

The 24-hour race at Spa provides the perfect place to debut the new car, as this is the sort of racing series the GT4 will be competing in. This isn’t the final version of the car, as it will spend the rest of the year testing and going through final tuning, making its way into customer hands by the end of the year. The car’s 4.0-liter biturbo V8 is able to make up to 503 hp and 443 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed sequential transaxle (rather than a seven-speed dual-clutch). Read more

FCA's restated sales show some big swings

A review of restated Fiat Chrysler sales at the model level points to a company that either didn’t accurately know what it was selling month to month or was playing fast and loose with its fleet sales. In its unprecedented restatement a year ago, which revealed that its then-vaunted streak of year-over-year sales gains actually had ended in 2013, FCA US downplayed the differences between what it had historically reported as its monthly sales and what a new reporting methodology showed was actually occurring.

Let’s take a deeper look at the figures. FCA and its dealers reported more than 15,000 sales of the Chrysler 200 sedan from July 2015 to June 2016 that the automaker now says didn’t occur. It also originally underreported the sales of almost 6,200 Dodge Grand Caravans and about 5,800 Jeep Compasses — sales that appeared only after the switch to its new reporting methodology. The three vehicles come from different FCA brands, but they have one thing in common: a high percentage of fleet sales.

If you ever had a chance to test-drive the McLaren 570S Spider, you would definitely agree that it is madness. Not the car itself, which is a cogent convertible design based on the already handsome coupe. The Spider will be McLaren‘s volume model in its lowest-priced, lowest-tier Sports Series designation. As such, it is the company’s starter supercar.

Should you have $208,800 in your Venmo account, you won’t give up anything except that fixed roof. There’s no perceivable performance demerit when it comes to this retractable hardtop, as it was developed alongside the regular 570S from the onset. The 0-to-60 time is a non-discernable one-tenth of a second slower, and it still gets to a 204-mph top speed when the roof is up. If you insist on a top-velocity hurtle with wind bathing the cabin, it would only limit you by 8 mph. So, yes, madness.

In an Audi commercial from China, a mother-in-law interrupts a wedding ceremony to inspect the bride, checking whether she’s up to standard. The older woman grabs the bride’s nose and ears, pinches her lower lip and peers at her teeth and tongue. The bride gets an OK – along with an extra warning to cover up her cleavage. It’s an ad from Ogilvy & Mather Beijing promoting used Audi cars that have been checked out and officially certified for resale.

But the ad is getting pushback on social media for comparing women to merchandise — specifically, to used cars that need to be checked from every angle. The ad was surprising given that Audi has made campaigns tackling gender stereotypes a centerpiece in markets from Spain to the U.S. One social commenter contrasted the Chinese spot to Audi’s messaging during the Super Bowl, about equal pay for women. Read more

Mercedes-Benz has a history of producing vans for the commercial vehicle market – but now the brand is branching out further with its new pick-up truck, called the X-Class. While this may seem like an all-new model for Mercedes, the X-Class is based on the Nissan Navara, the global successor to the Frontier. This gives the Mercedes some serious truck cred while allowing the German automaker to thoroughly customize its standards. Those hoping for a version here in North America will likely be sorely disappointed, as Mercedes announced plans to sell the X-Class in overseas markets, but not the United States.

The exterior is essentially a Nissan Navara with Mercedes-Benz styling front and rear. Not much has changed from the concept version. Still, it’s a handsome thing, with the familiar two-bar and three-pointed star grille, LED-accented headlights, and a wide lower intake up front. The flat rear features another large emblem flanked by tall, thin tail lights. There’s a large bar in the bed, presumably to mount lights. It also looks like roof rails and a tonneau cover are available on some trims. Read more

The 2018 Rolls-Royce Phantom keeps the old looks but still slays!: The eight-gen Rolls-Royce Phantom’s first pictures have been leaked to Chinese media over a week before it actually had to be officially revealed. The images, from an online brochure that isn’t meant to be live yet, prove that the new car keeps much of the old one’s looks, despite using a brand new platform that will be shared with the ‘Cullinan’ SUV the firm is working on.

It keeps the signature chrome grille and narrow headlights, albeit with a slightly altered shape, and the second pair of headlights is now gone. it looks like two-tone paint will again be a popular feature. The images show a long-wheelbase Phantom, which isn’t news in itself because we knew it was coming, but we have to admit we’re a bit disappointed in the centre console, which, in these photos at least, doesn’t look much like it belongs in a £350,000 car.

30 Vehicles charred by the flames at a Chevy dealership: Sometimes you simply leave your car for service, and instead of getting it back fixed, you don’t even get to see it at all, because it burned completely, until nothing has been left from it. This Tuesday night at this Chevrolet dealership, shortly after 7 p.m. a janitor was cleaning in the service building at Buff Whelan Chevrolet in Sterling Heights, Mich., and spilled cleaning supplies, causing what the fire chief called a “big ball of flame to erupt.” About 30 vehicles were destroyed in a blaze.

No one was reported injured, fire officials said. The cost of the damage was unknown. About 15 vehicles in the service building and 15 more outside were charred by the flames, said Sterling Heights Fire Chief Chris Martin. When the fire crews arrived, they “realized they had a big problem on their hands,” Martin said. “The roof came down. The walls came down.”. Martin called for a fourth alarm after arriving at the scene, which summoned every community in Macomb County north of Detroit to help control the fire.

General Manager Mark de la Cruz infuses the dealership with a custom scent called “My Way” to ensure that his vehicles don’t smell like other new cars. He said the store needed a cultural change. They had to change their style of customer service, and aroma became a big component in that.

The fragrance enters through the ventilation system and spreads from ceiling panels above the sales pavilion and service department. It puts customers into a different frame of mind. There’s a lot of apprehension about making a large purchase such as a luxury automobile. The combination of scents and sounds makes the experience more soothing for them. Authorities found five more sedans at a rail station in Warren, Ohio, and another nine at dealerships in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Each Fusion contained about 14.5 kilograms — or 32 pounds — of marijuana that was tightly packed into half-moon shapes. The drugs are worth more than $1 million, according to Silverio Balzano, the resident agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Youngstown, Ohio office.

“It’s my belief the drugs were never intended to make it to the dealerships,” he told. “Certainly the cartel wanted to unload them prior to that.”
