Mid-size SUVs appear to have the largest impact in swaying consumers from buying mid-size cars and minivans, both of which are down 20 percent this year. The 2017 calls for U.S. auto salesmight be approximately in the range of 16.8M to 17.3M units, which represents a 1% to 4% decline from last year.

Toyota to recall 228,000 Tacomas in U.S.

Toyota Motor North America is recalling about 228,000 2016 and 2017 Toyota Tacoma midsize pickups in the U.S. because their rear differentials may leak oil. Differentials leaking oil could become damaged and stop working, causing a loss of vehicle control, Toyota said in a statement Thursday. Damaged rear differentials also create noise and reduce propulsion if the vehicle is driven without being repaired.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recalls page includes a complaint a driver from Honolulu who said on Dec. 18, 2015, that the differential on the his or her 2016 Tacoma needed to be replaced at less than 10,000 miles because of the noise – which worsened over time. The driver’s service records said “silver shavings” were found in the differential, which continued to make the noise after being replaced. Read more

DS 7 Crossback to be launched in US?DS is a new Premium division of the PSA Group, and it has officially revealed its 2017 DS7 Crossback at this year’s Geneva auto show. This is the fourth compact crossover vehiclebuilt by the carmaker and it will slot above the smaller DS4 Crossback, which is a more rugged version of the DS 4 hatchback but with more ground clearance and body cladding.

In celebration of the DS 7 Crossback’s launch, DS will offer a special-edition model called La Premiere, which features Nappa leather upholstery, 20-inch alloy wheels, DS monogram badging, a BRM watch, watch strap design accents on the seats, and La Premiere badges of the dashboard and floor mats. Gas and diesel engines will be offered in Europe and will be paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Both will also come with a stop/start system to save fuel. A suite of active safety and driver assistance features are also available such as adaptive cruise control, land positioning assist, night vision, and PSA’s Active Scan Suspension, which uses cameras to anticipate road imperfections. Hyundai shows a puzzling coupe pattern in promo video

Watching a new promotional video released by Hyundai Motor Company, we found some curious info. We saw footage of a person working on a clay model of a car. It’s low, sleek, and looks like it would only have two doors. It appears to have a liftback as well, and fairly aggressive vents in the back. Nothing else in the video indicates what the car is, though. However, we’ve got some educated guesses. One possibility is that this is a model for the successor to the recently departed Hyundai Genesis Coupe. The short deck and steeply raked rear window and pillars fall right in line with the styling of Hyundai’s old sports car, not to mention the bulging rear fenders.
Genesis has also made it clear that they intend to have a coupe to replace the old Genesis on sale by 2020. The luxury brand also has a small rear-drive platform in development in the form of the G70 on which it could base the coupe, along with some reasonably potent engines. Last we heard, the twin-turbo 3.3-liter V6 was under consideration. However, an argument against this being a Genesis coupe is that it would be odd to show a Genesis model in a Hyundai video. The companies are clearly trying to put space between each other, so including a Genesis vehicle in this video seems out of step with the two brands’ goals. Read more

Ford announced first-quarter earnings sharply down on the year, with pre-tax profit falling $1.5bn to $2bn in its automotive segment, in results that underlined investor concerns about a cyclical downturn in the US auto industryFord’s US sales fell 5 per cent to 771,000 vehicles, although global profits were also hit by a host of other factors including higher warranty costsrecall costs, unfavourable exchange rates, higher commodity costs and investments in new technologies, the company said.

They have a good reason by the way, simply because a new analysis revealed that the selling process of a vehicle now takes longer. That’s despite them substantially ramping up incentives meant to sweeten their offer.

While the industry retail sales pace remains high, it is being powered by elevated levels of incentive spending which pose a serious threat to the long-term health of the industry. The latest numbers from showrooms are not pretty. Through April 16, the average incentive for a new vehicle was $3,499 — a record for the month, according to the report. The previous record of $3,393 was set in April 2009. Nearly four months into the year, the total value of incentives used to sell new vehicles has increased $1.9 billion to $16.4 billion — up 13 percent from the same time a year ago.

1 in 7 Americans say they might buy an electric vehicle next

About one in seven driving Americans may likely purchase an electric vehicle as their next car, according to an AAA poll, meaning that as many as 30 million Americans may pony up for an electric car within the next three to five years. While some of the motivation is environmental, survey recipients say that lower maintenance expenses and solo access to high-occupancy-vehicle lanes are also among the factors behind potentially going electric.
The poll indicates that about as many people are planning to buy an electric vehicle for their next car as are looking to buy a pickup, which is impressive given that the best-selling US vehicle is the Ford F-150. And things should only improve, as about 20 percent of millennials polled said that their next car would probably be an EV. The results are all the more encouraging, at least among green-car advocates, because gas prices have fallen about 40 percent within the past five years, meaning that there’s less of an incentive to go electric from a purely economic perspective. Through the first quarter of this year, US plug-in vehicle sales were up about 63 percent from a year earlier to about 39,000 vehicles. Read more

Tesla has lost its top safety rating from Consumer Reports

Tesla failed to install an emergency-braking feature it promised to owners as standard equipment. As a result, the electric carmaker has lost its top safety rating from Consumer Reports. The magazine, which provides an annual rating of vehicles sold in the US, said the Tesla Model S sedan was losing its top ranking in the ultra-luxury car category, falling to third place behind the Lexus LS and the BMW 7 Series. In a statement, Tesla said it had begun enabling the automatic emergency-braking feature on Tuesday via a software update.

The California automaker last week recalled 53,000 Model S and Model X vehicles to fix an unrelated parking brake issue. Consumer Reports said both Tesla models previously came with standard automatic emergency braking, a feature that helps reduce accidents. It said Tesla had cited a software issue for delays of up to six months in enabling the feature on more recent vehicles built since late October. Numerous auto companies have agreed to phase in standard automatic emergency braking on most vehicles over the next four years, including such mainstream models as the Toyota CorollaRead more

Tired of road traffic? No problem, take an Uber flying taxi!Uber won’t stop after upending the taxi market with its ride-hailing service. The company is now aiming for the skies, and that’s not a joke! Uber wants to build flying taxis, and it promises the plan to be ready until 2020.

The company expects to deploy its flying taxis in Dallas-Fort Worth and Dubai by 2020, Chief Product Officer Jeff Holden said at the Uber Elevate Summit in Dallas on Tuesday. Uber's flying taxis will be small, electric aircraft that take off and land vertically, or VTOLs, with zero emissions and quiet enough to operate in cities. 

Are dealerships selling vehicles with open recalls?

New York’s attorney general has reached legal settlements with 104 dealerships it identified as having sold vehicles without disclosing open safety recalls. As part of the settlement, reached on Friday with New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, those dealers must now notify customers two days before a sale of an unrepaired vehicle that no repair has been completed. Franchise dealerships are also required to provide loaner vehicles to customers if repairs to their recalled vehicles take more than one day to complete.
The settlement comes following an investigation by the New York attorney general’s office into dealers selling recalled vehicles to consumers without repairing or disclosing the recalls. The office said it found evidence of hundreds of such vehicles being sold to consumers from those 104 dealerships. Eric Schneiderman says that the safety recalls they uncovered were very serious and potentially deadly. Consumers deserve to know of any unresolved safety issues before buying a car for themselves or their family. Until this moment, you’d only seen spy shots of the Jaguar XF Sportbrake. Now we get our first official look at the 2017 Jaguar previewed in a new image that shows a full length panoramic roof. The estate model is expected to sport an exterior design that’s identical to the saloon barring its more practical bodyshape, which will increase boot space and rear head room.
The XF Sportbrake will be built upon the same aluminium architecture as the saloon, and it’ll also share engines with its sibling, meaning a 2.0-litre diesel will be the base unit, with 3.0-litre V6 petrol and diesel engines sitting above this in the range. VW shows its newest concept for the future of autonomous driving

This is Sedric, VW’s newest concept for the future of autonomous drivingSedric is fully autonomous, meaning it has no steering wheel or pedals, and it can be summoned at the push of a button for ride-hailing trips, a la Uber and Lyft. Volkswagen claims that Sedric is the first vehicle to be designed for fully autonomous driving “from scratch.” Of course, it’s important to note that Sedric is just a concept, meaning it does not exist anywhere but in the imaginations of a few VW engineers and designers. Which may explain why Sedric looks so angry. Cheer up, Sedric! Maybe someday you’ll be a real car.
Volkswagen says it’s using Sedric to highlight the importance of self-driving vehicles to the future of the company. The accompanying press materials are an alphabet soup of buzzwords like “individual mobility,” “sustainability,” and “cross-brand ideas platform.” But it’s hard to pay attention to that when this thing looks so much like a pissed-off toaster. Growing up in suburban Detroit, dealer Katie Bowman Coleman lived too far from her dad’s rural dealership to work summers there. Instead she sold clothes, which interested her far more than cars anyway. Coleman, now president of Bowman Chevrolet in Clarkston, Mich, says she watched her dad go through a lot of hard knocks in the car business. That was influential to making her think she was not sure she wanted to go into that business. But she was always interested in retail and she liked fashion.
So Coleman pursued a fashion career that led her to New York and Australia. But in 1993, when she returned to her roots in auto retailing, she applied lessons from the fashion world to the car business. For example, she display-ed cars the same way that she arranged shirts in a store and promoted online retailing before it became a trend in autos.
