Cobalt prices rise due to demand of lithium ion batteries: Cobalt’s automakers are using lithium ion batteries since they are preparing for an increase in electric production. These batteries will be used in both electric and hybrid vehicles. Shanghai Chaos Investments and Switzerland-based Pala Investments as two of the companies that invested in cobalt last year, although the amount they’ve stockpiled is unknown.

On Dec. 1, cobalt was just around $30,000 per metric tonne. One metric tonne equals 2,204 pounds. As of Monday, one metric tonne of cobalt was $49,000. That’s an increase of 63 percent in three months. However, EVs have not been hot sellers amid continued low prices for gasoline. In 2016, U.S. sales for the alternative power car segment dropped 19 percent from a year earlier. Battery-electric vehicles decreased 12 percent for the year, and hybrid sales fell 21 percent. Battery-electric vehicle sales might soar to 523 percent from 2016 to 2023, the increase translates to 416,571 vehicles and a 2.35 percent share of U.S. vehicle sales.

February car sales less resilient than anticipated

February car sales less resilient than anticipated: We were expecting for car sales to calm down in February, but despite all the expectations and predictions we were still hoping for better results. Bad news, U.S. auto sales showed to be even less resilient this month than anticipated. If we have to compare these results with February last year, than they are down 1.1%. Automakers like General Motors (GM), American Honda Motor Co., and Nissan North America reported new-car sales gains from a year ago. Volkswagen Group, plus the premium German nameplates and three independent brands, also posted sales increases. However, Ford Motor Co. (Ford) and Toyota Group reported lower tallies.

BMW of North America—Although BMW of North America (-2.5%) sold 24,712 units, BMW brand(+0.3%) sales rose by 60 units to 22,558 new vehicles with momentum from the 5 Series and X1, X3, and X5 SUVs. Mini (-24.1%) totals declined to 2,154 units despite strong demand for the Clubman.

U.S. car sales dropped 3.3% in February?: We have a new forecast for this month’s car sales and it includes a 3.3% drop to only 1.3 million units. Await for a decrease of 21% for the mid-size cars. Even with all the drops and decreases we can still say that the sales pace for the industry is healthy, and what’s more important it looks sustainable, as we head into high volume selling months ahead.

Retail growth for manufacturers will be tough to achieve in February, as consumer demand remains relatively flat despite increased incentives. Regardless of the expected dip in overall volume, at a SAAR of more than 17 million, the sales pace for the industry is healthy, and more importantly, looks to be sustainable as we head into the high volume selling months ahead.
